No passado dia 17 de Junho de 2004, o cardeal-patriarca de Lisboa, D. On June 17, 2004, the cardinal-patriarch of Lisbon, D. José Policarpo, celebrou, na Sé de Lisboa, uma missa em memória de Aristides de Sousa Mendes, o diplomata português que em 1940 salvou milhares de judeus ao passar-lhes vistos. A escolha do dia 17 de Junho ficou a dever-se ao facto de ter sido nessa data, em 1940, que o diplomata, ajudado pelos seus dois filhos mais velhos, começou a passar vistos a refugiados de guerra, entre eles milhares de judeus, impedindo assim a sua prisão e eventual morte às mãos dos nazis.
