German field marshal during World War II, head of the supreme command after 1938 and Hitler's military adviser. He dictated the terms of the armistice with France (1940) and was a member of the court which dismissed many of the officers who were sentenced to death for their role in the conspiracy of July (1944). Signed the unconditional surrender of Germany in Berlin on May 8, 1945. Tried in Nuremberg for war crimes, was hanged.
